Short explainers from our team.

IEE or EIA: which one does your project need?

An Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) is a shorter study for projects with a moderate impact. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a deeper study for projects with a bigger impact.

Which one applies depends on the category the Department of Environment gives your project. If you are unsure, ask before you start: the category decides the scope, the cost and the time.

Why does a factory need an ETP?

An effluent treatment plant cleans industrial wastewater before it is released. This protects rivers, soil and nearby communities, and it is required to get and keep environmental clearance.

A good ETP is designed for the wastewater your factory really produces, not for a generic figure. That is why we start with the characterisation of your effluent.

What is GIS, and why do environmental studies depend on it?

GIS (geographic information systems) lets you put data on a map and analyse it by place. In environmental work it answers questions such as which areas flood, where land use is changing, or which site is suitable for a plant.

Because every result is tied to a location, a map also makes findings easier for a regulator, a donor or a community to check.

What can satellite images tell us about water and land?

Satellites record the same place again and again. From those images we can map land cover, track changes in rivers and wetlands, and estimate vegetation condition and drought.

Remote sensing does not replace fieldwork. It tells you where to look, and fieldwork tells you what you are looking at.

Choosing a thesis topic in environment or water research

Start from data you can actually get. A topic is only as good as the data behind it, so check availability before you commit.

Keep the question narrow, pick methods you can explain, and agree the plan with your supervisor early. If you want a second opinion on a topic, our team is happy to talk.
